What’s pinkwashing?

stop pinkwashingPinkwashing is a PR tactic used by Israel which cynically exploits support for LGBT people.

Israel’s human rights abuses have made it increasingly unpopular internationally. Those abuses include settlements in the West Bank which are illegal in international law, the massive “apartheid wall” and the blockade of Gaza.

Israeli groups have adopted a strategy which aims to defend Israel by presenting it as modern, democratic and LGBT-friendly, and by demonising surrounding countries. The truth – about both Israel and its neighbours – is very different.

Pinkwashing tries to portray Israel as progressive and civilised because it treats LGBT people well. It’s a strategy which misuses LGBT struggles as a way of attacking the Palestinians – using the fight against homophobia and transphobia as a way of oppressing others.
