Over 70 hear Palestinian and US anti-pinkwashing speakers

SOASOver seventy people came to SOAS in central London on Sunday 21 September to hear two international speakers on pinkwashing.

Ghadeer, from Aswat, spoke about how Israeli LGBT groups had failed to take up the issue of Palestine, so that forming Aswat became necessary. She stressed that the main issue for Aswat’s members was their oppression as Palestinians, not as LGBT people.

She spoke movingly about the severe oppression of Palestinians living inside Israel in the last few months. As she explained, they have faced what the highest levels of exclusion and violence they have ever experienced. People have lost their jobs for making comments on social media. They have had no expression of sympathy from Israelis. There has been unprecedented police brutality on demos. Many people have been arrested violently and held for between 30 and 50 days. Marchers were outnumbered by armed police who used tear gas and rubber bullets. Protesters were sprayed with diluted sewage mixed with pepper spray.

We join the giant demo for Gaza

photo2smallMembers of No to Pinkwashing joined the huge demo for Gaza in London on Saturday 19 July. Up to 100,000 people took part – the protest took half an hour to go past. Early on in the day Transport for London announced that the huge protest was disrupting bus services in central London so much that anyone with a bus ticket could use the tube instead.

The demo coincided with a national protest in Glasgow, and protests also took place in cities including Bristol and Manchester, where demonstrators staged a protest inside Marks and Spencer. Yet this wave of support for Gaza was barely reported in the mainstream news.

We join G4S protest

Around a hundred people joined the protest at G4S’s London office on Thursday 17 April, including members of No to Pinkwashing with our banner.

G4S sells its security services to the Israeli government.

  • They provide services at detention centres where there is evidence that Palestinians are tortured.
  • They run prisons in the illegally occupied West Bank.
  • They run services at prisons in Israel to which Palestinians are tranferred from occupied territories – a breach of the Geneva convention.
